Course Description:
Online and mobile technologies—including instant messaging, cell phones, multitasking, Facebook, blogs, and wikis—are profoundly influencing how we read and write, speak, and listen. The internet and cell phones have disrupted many of our conventional understandings of ourselves and our relationships. This course will examine the core relational issues these media disturb, and will explore how we use mediated language and nonverbal behavior to develop and maintain communities, social networks, and new relationships, and how mediated communication allows us to build, maintain, or terminate relationships in our everyday lives. Through the examination of such topics as online language, emoticons, flaming, a/synchronicity, netiquette, and identity, this course will ultimately ask the question, “as more and more of us are ‘always on’ one technology or another—whether communicating, working, or just surfing the web or playing games—what kind of people are we becoming, as individuals and as family members or friends, if the relationships we form must increasingly compete for our attention with digital media?”
This page will serve as the launchpad for individual student Journal/Blog sites and entries and will provide comments, resources, and insights about the impact of technology on communication.
